Sailing in Dubrovnik: Best Time, Winds and Where to Sail

Dubrovnik is one of the easiest places on the Adriatic to enjoy a day under sail. The Elafiti Islands lie just off the coast, distances are short and there are sheltered bays for swimming. Here is what to know about the best time to go, the winds and where to sail.

Why Dubrovnik is good for sailing

  • Islands close by – on our trips, the first stop on Koločep is reached around 11:20 after a 10:00 departure.
  • Sheltered bays – the channels between the Elafiti Islands offer calm spots to anchor and swim.
  • Plenty to see – old villages, pine forests, a sandy beach on Lopud and the Blue Cave on Koločep.

Best time to go sailing in Dubrovnik

Summer brings the warmest sea and long, sunny days – ideal if swimming is a big part of your trip. Late spring and early autumn are quieter, with fewer boats in the bays and milder temperatures. Whatever the month, check availability for your exact dates.

Winds and sailing conditions

The Adriatic has a few well-known winds. In general terms:

  • Maestral – a north-westerly breeze that often builds in the afternoon on summer days; pleasant sailing conditions.
  • Jugo – a south-easterly wind that can bring clouds and bigger waves.
  • Bura – a north-easterly wind that can blow in strong gusts.

You don’t need to plan around any of this yourself. Your skipper keeps an eye on the forecast and adjusts the route – for example choosing sheltered bays on a windy day. If there isn’t enough wind to sail, the boat also has an engine. What happens if a trip cannot go ahead is set out in our Terms and Conditions.

Where to sail from Dubrovnik

  • The Elafiti Islands – Koločep, Lopud and Šipan, perfect for a half day or a full day. See our Elafiti Islands guide.
  • The Pelješac coast – quiet bays and an overnight stop in Kobaš.
  • Mljet – sheltered bays and nature, with an overnight stop in Okuklje.

Routes toward Jakljan, Mljet and Korčula may be possible on overnight trips, depending on the weather and the agreed itinerary.

Sailing holidays: one day or a few nights?

If you are in Dubrovnik for a few days, a half or full day on the water fits easily between sightseeing. If you want more of the sea, a 1–3 night trip lets you wake up at anchor and reach islands further away. Compare everything in our Dubrovnik sailing itinerary.

Do I need sailing experience?

No. Your professional skipper sails the boat, so you are free to swim, explore the islands or simply relax on deck. Read your first sailing trip for tips on what to bring.
